Inhabitants of cold northern regions, hoar foxes resemble ordinary foxes, but their sapphire-blue eyes and silvery-grey, shimmering coats immediately set them apart.

Combat: A hoar fox bites for 1–6 points of damage, but its primary weapon is a supernatural breath of frost—a cone of cold extending 30 feet, narrow enough to strike only a single target. This attack inflicts 2–12 points of cold damage (halved with a successful saving throw). Hoar foxes are completely immune to cold-based attacks but suffer double damage from fire; fire also destroys the value of their pelts.

Habitat/Society: Hoar foxes live and hunt in packs, often establishing dens near the edges of settlements. They are shy by nature and seldom aggressive, attacking only if cornered or threatened (roughly a 10% chance of hostility).

In Faerûn, they dwell in Icewind Dale, the Ice Mountains, and the Spine of the World. In Kara-Tur, they roam the colder regions as well. Rangers who dwell in icy lands sometimes befriend a hoar fox as a loyal animal companion.

Ecology: Hoar foxes are frequently hunted for their pelts, which are highly prized and can sell for up to 100 gp on the open market. Their blood is said to be an essential component in the enchantment of a white dragon’s tooth, further increasing their value to adventurers and alchemists alike.
